Welcome to Pedro Vilarroig's site!
Pedro Vilarroig was born in Madrid in 1954. From his infancy, there was music in his head, which took form at the very moment when he began his musical studies in the Royal Senior Conservatory of Music in Madrid aged 19.
Despite a predilection for the symphony orchestra, he has also written a number of works for chamber groups, solo piano, chorus and electroacoustics. He has nine symphonies and four concertos with orchestra, (piano, saxophone, violin and organ with violoncello). His compositional style clearly tends to tonality and modality, influenced by tendencies as numerous as they are different, from the great classic masters like Mahler, Schostakovitch, Prokofiev or Sibelius, to impresionism, serialism, jazz and film music. Although he uses a fusion of styles, the influence of the Spanish tradition is on the contrary very scant, with a more obvious inclination toward Central European music, occasionally with Oriental or Arabian touches.
The majority of his chamber and choral works have been premiered, as have some of those for orchestra, like the cantata La Profil’ de viaj spuroj by the Valencia Orchestra, the Orchestra of King Juan Carlos University, his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra as well as his Symphony nº 3 “Philosophycal” by the Neotonarte Symphony Orchestra, his Symphony nº 2 by the Heredia S.O (Costa Rica), the symphonic poem “The Odyssey” by the National Peru S.O and the Krasnoyarsk Symphony (Russia), two pieces for strings by the Lviv Chamber Orchestra "Academy" (Ukraine), etc. He has composed set works for choral competitions, music for the theatre (Costa Rica) and commissions from the Community of Madrid and its Children’s Choir, and various of his works have been recorded (Verso, Sonidisco, Editorial San Pablo, etc.).
Pedro Vilarroig is the founder of the Spanish Association of Neotonal Composers, bringing together other creators who cultivate neotonality, a fusion or syncretism of different styles. He is a Mining Engineer and lecturer in general physics and cosmology at the Senior Technical School of Mining Engineers in (Polytechnic University of Madrid).
